we all are searching.
so my friend, cory, is touring right now with this band- her sweet autumn misery. they came in to town and played a show…and it was nothing short of amazing. the band was awesome, and not only did i get to hang out with my pal who i have missed bunches, but got to meet and make some new friends! i drove to tupelo the next night to see them again and hear a few more bands. great show- again. we went to graceland too…which if you haven’t been-go. i didn’t think i’d ever go back…one night with paul mcloud is enough. But, i’m glad i did…i don’t get enough bizarre experiences in my day to day life & this always tops the list. anyways, all this to say that her sweet autumn misery has rocked my world. their lyrics are so honest, and they’ve got the talent to go along with it. they take an approach to ‘God in music’ that, i feel like, takes the religion, hypocrisy, and bs out of the beautiful relationship we were meant to have. check them out.
here’s one of my favorites.
searching-her sweet autumn misery
i want to live on the road, but i don’t have to play guitar
‘cause i can sing all on my own, & i don’t care if i get very far
‘cause i’m sick of writing songs i only mean to sell
& i wish that i could meet you
& not just speak through these headphones…or speakers, i guess
i’d like to share a pot of coffee & hear you speak about
your photography, your new cds, model cars, or a’s & b’s
or the way you play on the worship team
or the way you hate to hold their hand
or the song you learned in marching band
or how you don’t feel like a man…at all
cause we all are searching
yeah, we all are searching
i’m sick of playing house, religious cat & mouse, searching for a spouse
so tell me about your drug problems & the way she makes you laugh
& i’ll tell you about my empty heart & adolescent past
& we’ll speak of how you cut your wrist
and don’t believe in God…
& i’ll tell you that i love you from the bottom of my heart
‘cause you have blood
& i have blood
that’s enough
black or white, hermaphrodite
terrorist or israelite
prostitute or doctor with three sons
a catholic nun, a preacher’s son
a deaf man with legs, a blind girl with none
a friend with aids, a church with gays
they search for God in the same way…
as every silent child who never saw a day
‘cause mama wasn’t ready to give her life away
& praise to God that Heaven didn’t throw her name away
‘cause we all are searching
yeah, we all are searching.
